AN ADAPTIVE, RATE-OPTIMAL TEST OF A PARAMETRIC MODEL AGAINST A NONPARAMETRIC ALTERNATIVE by
نویسندگان
چکیده
We develop a new test of a parametric model of a conditional mean function against a nonparametric alternative. The test adapts to the unknown smoothness of the alternative model and is uniformly consistent against alternatives whose distance from the parametric model converges to zero at the fastest possible rate. This rate is slower than n. Some existing tests have non-trivial power against restricted classes of alternatives whose distance from the parametric model decreases at the rate n. There are, however, sequences of alternatives against which these tests are inconsistent and ours is consistent. As a consequence, there are alternative models for which the finite-sample power of our test greatly exceeds that of existing tests. This conclusion is illustrated by the results of some Monte Carlo experiments.

An Adaptive Empirical Likelihood Test for Parametric Time Series Regression Models
A test for a parametric regression model against a sequence of local alternative is constructed based on an empirical likelihood test statistic that measures the goodness-of-fit between the parametric model and its nonparametric counterpart. To reduce the dependence of the test on a single smoothing bandwidth, the test is formulated by maximizing a standardized version of the empirical likeliho...
متن کاملAdaptive minimax testing in the discrete regression scheme
We consider the problem of testing hypotheses on the regression function from n observations on the regular grid on [0, 1]. We wish to test the null hypothesis that the regression function belongs to a given functional class (parametric or even nonparametric) against a composite nonparametric alternative. The functions under the alternative are separated in the L2-norm from any function in the ...
متن کاملMinimax rates for nonparametric speci cation testing in regression models
In the context of testing the speci cation of a nonlinear parametric regression function, we study the power of speci cation tests using the minimax approach. We determine the maximum rate at which a set of smooth local alternatives can approach the parametric model while ensuring consistency of a test uniformly against any alternative in this set. We show that a smooth nonparametric testing pr...
متن کاملAdaptive Goodness - of - Fit Tests Based on Signed Ranks
Within the nonparametric regression model with unknown regression function l and independent, symmetric errors, a new multiscale signed rank statistic is introduced and a conditional multiple test of the simple hypothesis l = 0 against a nonparametric alternative is proposed. This test is distribution-free and exact for finite samples even in the heteroscedastic case. It adapts in a certain sen...
متن کاملTesting a Parametric Model against a Nonparametric Alternative with Identification through Instrumental Variables
This paper is concerned with inference about a function g that is identified by a conditional moment restriction involving instrumental variables. The paper presents a test of the hypothesis that g belongs to a finite-dimensional parametric family against a nonparametric alternative. The test does not require nonparametric estimation of g and is not subject to the illposed inverse problem of no...
